Help with genealogy and the internet
I've constructed a Getting Started page to help people with genealogy and the internet.

Uploading - UPPER vs lower case file names
GED2WWW uses lower case letters for all of the filenames for files that it produces. GED2WWW also uses these lower case names for the inter and intra page links. The filenames may not appear in lower case if you are using DOS or Windows (Windows 95 can do a spectacular job of mangling the case of letters in a filename) but it is important to make sure that the filenames are in all lower case when they are transmitted to your web host. If the filenames are not in lower case on your web server, inter and intra page links will probably not work properly.

Uploading - .html vs .htm
It is important to not change the filenames produced by GED2WWW in any way. Changing them may cause inter and intra page links to stop working. According to the HTML standard it is perfectly legal to have html files that end with either a .htm or .html suffix.

Problems with Accented Characters
Are you using an older version of GED2WWW? GED2WWW did not support accented characters until version 0.20.

Is your GEDCOM file saved in ANSEL format? If it is not, the accents won't make it through. There are 3 legal character formats that a GEDCOM file can be saved in:

You may also see a IBMPC formatted file, but that format is explicitly not supported by the GEDCOM standard. GED2WWW will try and process it as if it were an ASCII formatted file.

You can tell which format your gedcom file is in by looking at your GEDCOM file. Somewhere within the first 20 lines of the GEDCOM file there should be a line that reads something like

   1 CHAR ANSEL
This line indicates which format your GEDCOM file is saved in. If it is not in ANSEL format, there should be a setting in your genealogy database software that will enable it to save in ANSEL format.

Multiple Databases on one Site
If you want to put multiple GED2WWW databases on the same site you must put each database in a different directory on that site. If you do not, the files from each database over-write each other.

GED2WWW can't find my gedcom file
Before GED2WWW version 0.30 the DOS/Windows version not support long filenames, or filenames with spaces in them. If using a pre-0.30 version of GED2WWW I recommend upgrading to 0.30. If that is not possible, try saving your gedcom file in the same directory with the GED2WWW.exe program and giving is a short name with no special characters (such as database.ged).
